Online Poker in the casino – a strategy game or a game of luck?
Whether you play it in a bar, with friends, in a land based casino or in a virtual casino, poker is the current trend sport in many countries. The reason for this is the huge prizes successful poker players can win: All the time successful participants of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) win several million dollars at a poker tournament, which can be attended by everyone – thanks to freeroll promotions offered by some of the biggest providers.
Another reason for the growing popularity is that Online Poker is not a game of luck! Those who do a lot of training are in most cases getting better results over time. “Not a game of luck?” is the question many of you will ask right now, “but the cards that are dealt have a random order!?” That’s right of course, but the element of luck of this game ends right here. In fact, the game is more about making decisions in uncertain situations (it is not by chance that you can sometimes read in the economic section of a newspaper about the “poker game of negotiations”).
Let’s look at an example: If a player gets poor cards at a Texas Hold’em game and the flop (the first three community cards) does not improve his chance of winning, he can decide on the basis of probability whether e.g. he gets a second 7 and a second 10 or if he will in fact get a straight in the end.
Alternatively a player can lure his opponents into a trap by pretending to have a very high chance of winning (a so called “bluff”). This is also a skill which has less to do with luck but rather with experience and talent. So a typical bluff would be e.g. to have a junk-hand, make a very high bet and at the same time have a completely relaxed facial expression. Or if you have a good hand you choose another strategy to lure the opponents into a trap.
Of course there are days where you just can’t get a good hand or you keep getting one ace/king after another. This can be certainly called bad luck in the first case or luck in the second one. But without a minimum of skill all the luck is completely worthless – and with skill bad luck is not that problematic.
